What are SEO Link building strategies that still work in 2018?
There is a lot of stuff out there about link building but we want to be careful about not getting black-listed. What are some legitimate and scalable strategies that still work in 2018. We once got in trouble for doing reciprocal links with other sites.
Link building is a tricky one because many of the methods can lead to penalties, including guest posts. Most methods are safe if used to a limited degree & if part of a diversified portfolio of natural links. My preference is to invest in activities that DO drive natural links, which is difficult to scale, so it's best to go deep & shoot high in hopes that your effort will spread or have the potential to go viral.
Everyone has different methods--here are some I've found to stand the test of time:
Ultimate guide or resource to a specific topic - if done well, this will attract links for a long period of time.
Data - I use a lot of surveys and data gathering to illuminate a topic of interest to the press, then reach out to them for coverage. If you get in one major publication, you'll likely end up in many more.
Ego Stroke - interview experts in your field, clients, or any other people who may be proud enough of the piece to link to the it from their site.
Reddit - you need to limit your efforts here & become an active member of the community you are targeting, but if you have a piece that becomes popular, many writers use Reddit as a starting point to find sites or topics to write about.
Targeted emails to journalist or bloggers - find sites you'd like coverage from and pitch them on an authentic piece that their readers would appreciate it. Make it really easy for them to write the piece. Give them photos, quotes, and possibly even write the piece for them.
Guest post outreach is a legitimate strategy that still works.
The process is pretty simple:
1) search for relevant websites that actively accept public contributions (you're looking for "write for us" and "contributor guidelines" pages) 2) pitch yourself and your idea for an article on their website 3) write a useful or interesting article for them, and include a link to your page 4) assuming you put genuine effort into writing a good article, your blog post will be published with a link back to you.
