PR is an ideal tool for helping smaller businesses to appear much larger, more prominent and important than they really are. Think about it: the obvious implication of media coverage is that something is important enough to be newsworthy. So for smaller companies, it is an ideal method to raise their profile in front of a broad audience.
The other factor that’s important for smaller (and perhaps younger) companies is that PR is a method of storytelling. And in order to tell an effective story, you must naturally understand what makes you unique, interesting, compelling — and relate that in a clear and concise fashion. In other words, you need to understand your messages, value proposition, positioning, etc. So it becomes an ideal exercise for smaller companies to better define who they are, and why customers, investors and others should care.
