Absolutely not. Passion is the thing that brings laser focus to an endeavor and helps weather the storms. Blind passion rarely leads to great results, but refined and tempered passion is an important ingredient.
Here’s my example: After working 80-90 hour weeks at Microsoft full of passion and sleeping on the office floor, I burned out and left to try something less demanding—a car wash business. I sought cash flow and a means to an end but left out the key ingredient of passion.
It was wholly unsatisfying and I quit soon after. Startups are hard. Without passion fueling the drive it is even harder. As an investor, I look for passion but also good business sense.
