There are third party companies that you can hire to do factory audits, and I believe you can request this as part of the audit. Gary Almond is the founder of one such company and wrote a post on factors to consider when importing products from China. Below is an excerpt:

A factory audit is not necessary in every case, but if you are committing a lot of money to an order, the cost of a factory audit is very small in comparison to the cost of being scammed or by selecting a supplier that can’t do the job properly.
