To what degree does marketing rely on psychological manipulation?
I recently attended a conference where one of the speakers made the argument that a product or services intrinsic value is not as important to its success as the psychological manipulation and brainwashing employed by marketing campaigns. Much as we think we are independent actors who act rationally, we are susceptible to manipulative techniques to make us buy a product or choose one over the other. What do you think of this view?
