Social can be effective for B2B, but content is only part of the equation. You need to pair a paid strategy with your content otherwise you are producing stuff that almost nobody will see, which it sounds like is what your competition is doing.
It is certainly easier to find success on social for B2C companies, but your target customers are likely using social so reaching them on those platforms is still possible. I'd recommend starting with Facebook/Instagram. Their ad platform is the most advanced and is generally the most cost effective.

Its true that B2C brands get the most benefits out of social media, but for B2B brands, it can be a useful tool as well if used with a proper strategy. For example, LinkedIn can be very beneficial when it comes to B2B businesses, as it helps you to connect with people on your Industry and also gives you the potential to stand out as a industry leader which will eventually help you to get prospective clients/businesses.
However, what is important here is to find out which social media platform is ideal for your business. And to do that you need to have a solid understanding of your target audience and have to find out where you can find those people most. When you finally find out the above its all comes down to creating relevant content specifically for that platform and audience. The more relevant it is, the more benefit you get. All the best.
