We run a high touch consulting business and a little swag helps us appear more professional. We give it to our clients or prospective clients. We do not however, go to conferences and leave distribute it or drop it willy nilly hoping to create "brand awareness" or generate new business. This is too expensive and coarse a method for us.
Recently I attended conferences where some brands (WooCommerce for example) gave everyone a small backpack and winter hats. Maybe it works for them because they are trying to gain mass adoption of their software while we are laser targeting clients that fit a specific profile.
I'd be interested in hearing what others have to say.
