If the business could not monetize the list, how valuable could it really be? A few ideas come to mind:
1. Find affiliate offers to send to the list. For this to work you would also have to have educational content around topics that the audience cares about. Straight pitches may work once or twice but will then burn out the list and it will be unresponsive.
2. Sell it to companies in the same industry. For this to work (for the list to be valuable to them) you would have to do a 'warm transfer' and maybe even have a series of co-branded emails (Your company and theirs) or they will get spam complaints and could have their domains blacklisted.
