The best thing you can do is build your own brand and attempt to get traffic from channels like Hacker News, Reddit, Inbound.org etc. where anyone can submit content.
This assumes the content you create is actually compelling.
If you're starting from scratch, then yYou need to find and form relationships with influencers in your niche. You can do this from day 0 without writing anything.
Google will discriminate against you because you have a new website. That's why I always suggest anyone starting a website buys another existing website from Flippa or any other marketplace.
Anything that's been live over 6 months with actual content on the page will save you tons of wasted time waiting for Google to recognize your domain name.
Ultimately you will need to produce a lot of content to do well in Google.
Just like musical artists, not every song they write is going to be a 'hit' so you need to consistently publish good content.

Absolutely. I speak from experience, having beat out large teams of SEOs and behemoth high authority sites like Amazon & Wikipedia throughout my career. The big sites certainly have huge advantages & any content they put out almost instantly ranks, but big sites have problems like these:
- Slow at creating content - big sites rarely take advantage of new developments or jump on recent news. A single landing page can sometimes take big sites up to a year to create due to lots of internal red tape, different priorities, etc (I've worked within & consulted for some of these sites and it is super frustrating). You can publish faster & get yourself some juicy links & traffic.
- Too many pages - many of the big sites have millions, or hundreds of millions of pages. If they aren't prioritizing the pages you are competing against, they are at a disadvantage as their link equity is spread thin & some pages may not even be indexed. I see smaller sites competing with big sites all the time because they are more focused & niche.
- Outside links to individual pages - Google prefers pages that have external links coming into them, but many big sites rely purely on their internal link structure & do zero work to get links into specific pages (other than their primary channel pages). Get other sites to link to some of your specific pages & you'll see good things happen to your rankings.
