To attract the attention of your customers before they arrive at your destination, you need to know your target audience well. Once you understand who they are, how they plan vacations, and which tools they use for research before they go, you can reach them effectively.
Your question doesn’t hint at where you are in relation to this audience yet. You might need to create target audience profiles to get to know them better, or look closely at your site’s metrics to see which sites they visit you from. The key is to work towards knowing who they are, and where they hang out online. Then you can market to them using the methods and websites they’re already familiar with.
This almost certainly means social media advertising will be part of your strategy. If your target demographic loves Facebook, a Facebook targeted ad can work well. Make sure to narrow down the target by more than just “travels often” so you’re reaching the audience who is most likely to rent your stuff. For example, if you rent out surf equipment, it makes more sense to send your ad to young adults than to seniors.
You’ll also want to advertise on the other platforms where your target customer can be found, including other social media sites and review sites. Many people read reviews as they plan their vacations, so make sure to have an active, positive presence on sites like Yelp and Google Reviews. Keep an eye on your ratings, encourage customers to leave reviews, and address negative ones as needed.
Brush up on your social media accounts while working on advertising, too. A social media presence packed with great visuals, user-generated content like customer photos, and an appealing brand voice will get people to pencil you into their vacation plans. Don’t forget to have an easy-to-navigate website. Use SEO to ensure your site shows up in the right searches.
If you fill your online presence with high-quality photos, videos, and great reviews, while marketing to your specific audience, you’ll see your tourist rentals grow. It’s all about making sure that you show up in the searches they make when they plan their vacations (and that they like what they see).

I agree with Elyse and would add TripAdvisor.com and other travel sites. You can run ads on TripAdvisor and then re-target those who click on your links to make sure you are "top of mind" as they plan their trips. While I don't like TripAdvisor's new "Facebook news feed format" as a consumer, it probably is more effective for advertisers. Your ads can now run in "native" mode without delineation from the content!
