I haven't studied product hunt, but doing an little research, combined with familiarity with algorithms from other popular upvoting platforms, here are my takeaways:
- Submit really early in the day (between midnight and 8am)
- Submit middle of the week
- Make friends with active hunters before you launch - encourage votes and comments/discussion
- Actively comment & encourage discussion
- Focus on the hunters - What is interesting to them? What would stand out? What is different? You may have to alter your messaging & positioning for this crowd (vs what you would do outside of product hunt).
- Avoid direct linking. Send people in to search for you or browse for you. Product Hunt wants the voting to be natural, not manufactured from the outside (by ads, or paid voters, or companies with built-in fan bases).
- Don't swarm your listing with too many brand new voters. You need existing & active hunters.
